Ray was born and raised in the heart of the Southside of San Antonio. He is a 1998 graduate of Harlandale High School where he was a three-sport student-athlete (football, baseball, & golf). Ray helped re-establish a dormant Harlandale golf program in 1996 and won the first medalist district championship in school history in 1998. During his senior season at HHS, he was named to the Greater San Antonio First Team All-City squad and earned a golf scholarship to Texas Lutheran University. While at TLU he was named conference player of the week four times, won the American Southwest Conference Championship in 2002, and was recognized as the TLU Co-Athlete of the Year. In 2008 he started his nearly three-year stint on the pro golf mini-tour circuit which included a trip to PGA Tour Q-School in 2010. August 2011 was the start of a new career for Garza. He started out at Leal Middle school as a teacher and golf coach helping establish the district-wide middle school golf program that exists today. In 2014, Coach Garza took a teaching position at Harlandale High School, and in 2015 stepped in as head boys & girls golf coach. In Coach Garza’s inaugural season, he led the Harlandale boys and girls team to their first ever team district championships.
